CRMC: Point Judith is state’s 2nd ‘clean marina’

NARRAGANSETT – The Point Judith Marina has been honored by the R.I. Coastal Resources Management Council with the state’s second “clean marina” designation.

“The CRMC applauds Point Judith Marina as the second Clean Marina in Rhode Island,” Michael M. Tikoian, the CRMC’s chairman, said in the Friday afternoon announcement. “The marina and its staff have gone to great lengths to become certified.”

“Point Judith Marina is honored to be one of the first marinas in Rhode Island to be awarded clean marina status,” said Don Vivenzio, the marina’s general manager.

“We would like to thank our crew for their efforts and assistance, and our customers who helped and cooperated with everything from our recycling programs to the use of vacuum sanders. We know that this will be a continuous educational process for all involved.

In addition, Vivenzio said, “We would also encourage the rest of the marine facilities in Rhode Island to consider using the Clean Marina Guidebook as a tool … and eventually applying for clean marina status.”

As a clean marina, Point Judith will receive a special plaque from the CRMC, recognizing its status, as well as flags showing the Clean Marina logo. Marinas that maintain this status will receive the R.I. Clean Marina Award and other incentives that will help distinguish them as top-tier “green” businesses.

The CRMC’s Clean Marina Program “provides an easy to follow process through which Rhode Island marinas can ensure they are environmentally friendly and responsible facilities,” Tikoian said. “We look forward to celebrating other marinas’ accomplishments as they are designated clean marinas.”

The state’s first facility to achieve clean marina status under the program was Allen Harbor Marina in North Kingstown, whose certification was announced by the CRMC in early September. (READ MORE.)

The program – launched in February 2007 – is designed to recognize environmentally-responsible marinas, boatyards and yacht clubs that voluntarily go beyond regulatory requirements, applying innovative pollution prevention to their day-to-day operations. It was developed by the CRMC in cooperation with the R.I. Department of Environmental Management, the Rhode Island Marine Trades Association and Save The Bay.

The R.I. Coastal Resources Management Council is a regulatory agency that issues permits for work in coastal regions of Rhode Island. The CRMC is responsibile for the preservation, protection, development and, where possible, restoration of the state’s coastal areas. For more information, visit www.crmc.ri.gov.
