WOONSOCKET – CVS Health Corp. is broadening the use of its time-delay technology on safes across all U.S. pharmacies, the company recently announced.
The Woonsocket-based retail and pharmacy corporation’s recent expansion of the technology, which enforces an electronic delay after an employee opens a safe, impacts 800 pharmacies in 13 states, according to the announcement, including 66 locations in Rhode Island.
The goal of the rollout is to deter potential robbers from targeting pharmacies, according to the corporation.
Thomas M. Moriarty, chief policy officer and general counsel at CVS Health, said in a statement that the technology is intended to “help reduce the theft and diversion of prescription medications and bring added security to our stores, which creates a safer environment for our customers, colleagues and communities.”
The company first launched the time-delay safes in 2015 in Indianapolis, where it says it then recorded a 70% decline in robberies.
