Dec. 1% hotel tax collection jumps year over year on traditional hotels

PROVIDENCE – Collection of the 1 percent hotel tax in Rhode Island totaled $215,339 in December, a 14.7 percent increase year over year, according to the R.I. Department of Revenue Monday.

Traditional hotels accounted for $191,009 in collection for the month, an increase of $30,067 from one year prior.

Realtors and homeowners collections of the tax totaled $20,160 in December, a $2,414 decline year over year.

Room resellers and hosting platforms accounted for $4,170 in collections, just $1 more than the previous year.

The largest collection of the 1 percent hotel tax in December was in Providence at $51,116, followed by Newport at a $43,953 total collection.

The largest nominal decrease in collections of any municipality occurred in New Shoreham, where collection declined $6,677 year over year to $8,627, largely due to a decline in collection from realtors and homeowners.

The largest nominal increase in collections of any municipality in the state took place in Westerly, where collection increased $19,464 to $26,807, reflecting a $16,756 increase in hotel collection and a $2,683 increase in collection from realtors and homeowners.

The DOR noted that the hosting platforms and room sellers collections, as well as the realtors and homeowner collections, include refunds and adjustments made to prior periods.

Fiscal year to date in December, collection of the 1 percent hotel tax totaled $3 million, an $88,297 decline from $3.1 million at the same time in 2017, attributable to a $93,127 decline in collections from realtors and homeowners.
