DEM announces $4M in grants to protect green space

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Environmental Management is now accepting proposals for $4 million in matching grants to protect green space in the state, the DEM announced Tuesday.

Funding for the grants originates in the 2016 Green Economy Bond which apportions $35 million for the preservation and improvement of recreational facilities, open space, and the lands and waters of the state.

In this round of grants, proposals may apply for up to $400,000 of funding for a project which can go towards covering up to half of the projected cost. Projects that lead to the expansion or improvement of existing protected lands will be prioritized while projects with climate-change impacts will be considered.

Funding is additionally available to cover costs regarding appraisal, title and survey services related to project proposals. The Natural Heritage Preservation Advisory Committee will review grant proposals which will be ultimately awarded by the State Natural Heritage Preservation Commission.
