DEM, EPA announces water quality grants


The Department of Environmental Management (DEM) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will award more than $450,000 in grants for 10 projects that will improve water quality throughout Rhode Island.


The grants, funded by DEM and EPA through the federal Clean Water Act, will be used by Rhode Island communities and a Providence-based non-profit organization to implement water quality restoration projects and onsite wastewater management plans.


Those receiving awards include Charlestown, Cranston, East Greenwich, Smithfield, South Kingstown, and the South Providence Development Corporation.A ceremony acknowledging the grants was held at the East Greenwich Town Council Chambers on Jan. 23. Presiding at the event was DEM’s Director Jan Reitsma and Robert Mendoza, the director of EPA’s Rhode Island’s Office of Ecosystem Protection.
