PROVIDENCE – DESIGNxRI revealed the 2019 inductees to the RI Design Hall of Fame Friday, announcing the induction of three artists who will receive Lifetime Achievement Awards. The organization also announced the two recipients of the 2019 Emerging Designers awards.

In the lifetime achievement category, Everett Benson, James Estes and Burr Sebring will be inducted this year.

Benson is a stone carver, calligrapher, sculptor and typeface designer. He served as the director of The John Stevens Shop in Newport from 1965 to 1993. The shop is the third-oldest continuously operating business in Rhode Island according to PBN’s 2019 Book of Lists, having providing architectural inscription and memorial design since 1705..

Estes is being recognized for his architectural career. DESIGNxRI said that his firm, Estes/Twombly Architects, of which he is a principal, has been the recipient of more than 150 awards and honorable mentions for its designs.

Sebring is being honored for his work as a silversmith and flatware designer. Sebring served as design director of Gorham Manufacturing Co. from 1972 to 1981. Following his departure, Sebring has been handcrafting silver pieces and silverware sets, with his work being featured at museums around the country.

The two 2019 Emerging Designers to be awarded this year are Lindy McDonough and Jason Pamental.

McDonough is creative director and co-founder of Lotuff Leather in Providence. The company, an in-house leather studio, specializes in hand-made leather bags. McDonough was the first Rhode Island-based designer to be inducted into the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Her collection is available at 72 retailers worldwide, and her work has been featured in international publications.

Pamental is a designer and specialist in web typography. Pamental has served on the board of the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, serves on the board of the Association Typographique Internationale, is a published author and has taught graphic design at Rhode Island College. His clients range from tech companies to sports leagues to universities.

The awards ceremony is part of DESIGNxRI’s Design WeekRI 2019, which a celebration of local designers that features studio tours, design talks, workshops, social gatherings and the Hall of Fame induction party.

Design Week begins on Sept. 12 and continues through Sept. 21.
