Roger A. DeVivo has been named vice president of information technology at BankNewport. He will be responsible for all aspects of the bank’s information technology, including project coordination and upgrades to the bank’s computer systems, applications and networks. DeVivo joined BankNewport in 1999 and has held various positions, most recently serving as assistant vice president of information technology. He has a B.S in philosophy from the University of Connecticut.

PBN: How has your educational background influenced your career path?
DEVIVO: My formal education in philosophy has assisted me a great deal throughout my professional career. In philosophy, one is required to think and solve complex problems. The art of being a systems and networking engineer requires the same skill set. The information technology field also requires the human aspect of managing and collaborating with different types of personalities.

PBN: The computers we use to access information regularly improve and new hardware appears on the market frequently, how is BankNewport staying ahead of the curve without having to purchase new products every month?
DEVIVO: The Bank has a life cycle for its PCs, servers, and networking systems of approximately three to five years; however, some newer applications or systems will require us to upgrade PCs that need access to it sooner. When this happens, we continue to make use of the systems being replaced by utilizing them for disaster recovery training and testing. Systems that no longer have value to the Bank are sent to a recycling location. As for the applications, we also have a standard life cycle for each type. Specialized banking applications receive quarterly upgrade cycles. Our biggest challenge when adding new applications is the huge administration and increased demand on our internal help desk.

PBN: Making an IT department environmentally friendly requires a big-picture strategy filled with incremental steps. Do you or your team members have any future plans for BankNewport?
DEVIVO: Yes, we are working on a project currently which will allow us, over the next few years, to cut the physical number of servers in half in our data centers and administration facilities. We are doing this with what is called server virtualization, where it is possible to run more than one server operating system on one piece of hardware, overall cutting energy costs in the data centers. •
