DLT: R.I. job count rose to record level in June

CRANSTON – The number of jobs in Rhode Island hit a new record in June, according to the latest report by the R.I. Department of Labor and Training: a total of 499,100.
This figure represents 800 new jobs from the previous month, 3,200 new jobs since the beginning of the year, and 5,400 new jobs added in the past 12 months.
In a statement, Gov. Donald L. Carcieri said that the announcement was “good news for our economy and good news for Rhode Islanders.”
“While job numbers go up and down from month to month, Rhode Islanders should be pleased that our overall employment trend has continued to be very positive,” Carcieri said in the statement. “My administration will continue working to grow jobs by encouraging a business friendly environment in the Ocean State.”
The governor also noted that Rhode Island has been among the leaders in job growth in New England over the past five years. Rhode Island has seen the greatest rate of private-sector job growth overall from December 2002 through May 2007 of any state in the region except for New Hampshire.
The DLT report also noted that Rhode Island’s unemployment rate dropped by 0.1 percent in June 2007 to 4.7 percent.
