Cranston Mayor Ken Hopkins has signed an executive order allowing police to remove homeless encampments.

Hopkins, a Republican seeking reelection, told WPRI-TV CBS 12 that he is concerned about illegal activities in the encampments, including drug use and prostitution and that they hurt the quality of life for neighbors living near them.

Cranston City Councilor Robert Ferri, a Democrat who is running for mayor, issued a statement calling the executive order anti-homeless and noted the city has not built new affordable housing in more than 13 years.
