Sports betting started on Nov. 26, 2018, at the Twin River Casino Hotel in Lincoln, followed at the Tiverton Casino Hotel on Dec. 3, 2018.
DOR said the report it received from the sports book indicated there were more than 50,000 bets placed related to the National Football League championship game and that 76.6 percent of bets on the point line favored the New England Patriots, which covered the points spread in its 13-3 win over the Los Angeles Rams.
“The Super Bowl proved to be great advertising for this new gaming amenity and a powerful test of the sports book being run by IGT-William Hill on behalf of the R.I. Lottery,” stated Paul Grimaldi, chief of information and public relations for the R.I. Department of Revenue. “We expect that many first-time visitors are happy with the service and the results.”
Rhode Island, per its contract with the sports book and local casinos, receives 51 percent of the revenue from sports betting. The casinos receive 17 percent of the revenue and International Game Technology PLC and William Hill receive 32 percent of the revenue.
“We have a lot of happy customers who we expect will be recirculating their winnings throughout the Rhode Island economy in the days and weeks ahead,” said Grimaldi.
