DOR: May food and beverage tax collections increase 15.7%

PROVIDENCE – Collections of the local 1 percent meal and beverage tax in May increased 15.7 percent year over year to $2.73 million, a $370,568 increase, the R.I. Department of Revenue reported Monday.

Year-to-date collections in May 2017 for the local 1 percent hotel tax totaled $24 million, 3.2 percent more than the $23.24 million year-to-date collection in May 2016.

Among all the municipalities in the state, Providence collections increased the most nominally, increasing $141,891 year over year to $625,294, nearly double the second-highest amount collected in the state of $314,951 by Warwick.

Narragansett collections declined the largest nominal amount year over year, falling $8,081 to $56,566 in May.

Revenue from the local 1 percent hotel tax is paid to the Division of Taxation and then distributed among the state’s municipalities.
