Dowling named CEO of Brown investment office

PROVIDENCE – After five years as chief investment officer, Joseph Dowling III has been appointed to the newly-created role of CEO of Brown University’s investment office.

In this role, Dowling will develop new partnerships, cultivate investment opportunities and support the school’s strategic projects.

The appointment was effective July 1.

Jane Dietze, who served as managing director of the Brown investment office for the past five years, was promoted to the school’s vice president and chief investment officer. Moving forward, she will lead capital allocation and investment processes.

Together with Dietze, Dowling will collaborate with the school’s investment committee and the Corporation of Brown University to manage and implement the school’s investment strategy for its $3.7 billion endowment.

Calling the promotions “complimentary,” Robert Goodman, university trustee and chair of the investment committee, said: “We recognized an opportunity to separate the core executive and investment functions into two complementary roles, and this will truly optimize the incredible talent in the Investment office.”

In addition to the promotions of Dowling and Dietze, Joshua Kennedy – the department’s current investment director and a 1997 Brown alumnus – was appointed to Dietze’s previous position as managing director.

Per the Ivy League school’s data, the endowment has grown from $2.6 billion in 2012 to its current total at $3.7 billion.
