Dr. Hittner to retire, Raimondo to appoint Marie Ganim as OHIC commissioner

PROVIDENCE – The governor’s office announced today that Dr. Kathleen Hittner, the state’s current Health Insurance Commissioner, will retire from her position effective next month. Governor Gina M. Raimondo will appoint Marie L. Ganim to the post and has submitted her name to the R.I. State Senate for advice and consent.

Hittner was appointed to the position in June of 2013, and since that time has maintained some of the lowest rate increases in the country during a time of immense uncertainty about the state of American healthcare, the Governor’s office said in a press release on Thursday.

Ganim, her replacement, is currently the deputy chief of staff and policy director for the R.I. State Senate. She is also a former policy director for U.S. Congressman Robert Weygand and was previously a health policy specialist in the R.I. House of Representatives.

“I am grateful to Dr. Hittner for her years of service to Rhode Islanders, and wish her the best of luck in this next chapter of her life,” said Raimondo. “I am confident that Dr. Ganim possesses the expertise and strong professional background needed to keep us moving in the right direction.
