DuMoulin named to receive first 1BI award

BLOCK ISLAND – Part-time island resident Richard DuMoulin has been named to receive the first “1BI” award for lifetime achievement, the Block Island Maritime Institute said today.
DuMoulin was selected for his volunteerism, his achievements in professional and recreational sailing, sailing education and maritime safety, his promotion of maritime history, and his dedication to preserving the natural beauty of the island, its Great Salt Pond and the oceans, the institute said.
DuMoulin, the son of Eleanor DuMoulin and America’s Cup Hall of Fame member Ed DuMoulin, has been active in sailing on the island since B.I. Race Week in 1967. He lives in Larchmont, N.Y., with his wife, Ann, and their four children.
“Richard has provided a clear course in the maritime and sailing world for all to enjoy for generations,” said board member Champlin Starr, a 12th generation islander and retired merchant mariner.
DuMoulin is the president of Intrepid Shipping; a member of the boards of Tidewater Inc., the Seamen’s Institute and the New York Yacht Club; a member and former commodore of Storm Trysail; and a member of the Larchmont Yacht Club, the Yacht Racing Association of Long Island Sound, the Royal Ocean Racing Club UK and The Cruising Club of America.
In 2003, he sailed from Hong Kong to New York City on the 52-foot trimaran Grand America II, to support the Sites Alive Foundation. He also has sailed in the America’s Cup, on the Constellation, the Intrepid and the Enterprise, and his Lora Ann won the double-handed class in the Bermuda Race in 2002-2006.
He previously has been honored with the U.S. Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal.
DuMoulin “personifies the vision and mission of the Block Island Maritime Institute,” Wendell Corey, the institute’s president. “The ‘Fill a Child’s Sail with a Block Island Breeze’ program honoring Richard will support the children of Block Island and bring children from New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts to [the island] for sailing programs and to enjoy the beauty and magic of Block Island.”
The award DuMoulin will receive takes its name from a local navigational buoy, he added.
“The Institute feels there isn’t a more fitting name for this award than the trusted aid to navigation – 1BI, the bell buoy off Block Island’s Sandy Point – that sailors, fishermen and merchant mariners have relied on for years,” Corey said.
The Block Island Maritime Institute was founded in January 1998. Its offerings include a sailing program and annual trip to the Caribbean for students at the Block Island School and aquaculture programs for oysters and scallops. www.blockislandmaritimeinstitute.org.
