EAST PROVIDENCE – The Phillipsdale Historic District, 80 acres of 19th century mill village on the Seekonk River, has been added to the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service.
The designation recognizes the village’s contributions to the history of local industry, architecture, and community development, the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission said in an announcement Wednesday.
The listing means the federal government considers the district worthy of preservation.
It also gives the area special consideration for federally assisted projects and makes properties within it eligible for federal tax breaks for historic rehabilitation projects.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for Phillipsdale to be recognized for its contribution towards the industrialization of America that began in the mid 19th century and its influence in shaping our community,” East Providence Mayor Bruce Rogers said.
“Placement of Phillipsdale on the National Register of Historic Places will encourage rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of our historic buildings and strengthen the City’s cultural heritage.”
