EAST PROVIDENCE – A $144,410 federal grant from the U.S. Economic Development Agency has been awarded to the city to develop a transportation improvement plan for the city’s Waterfront District, Sens. Jack Reed, D-R.I., and Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., and Rep. David N. Cicilline, D-R.I., announced Thursday.

The redesign is supposed to improve traffic flow in the area and will include adding ramps to Interstate 195 as well as safety improvements to protect pedestrians and bike riders.

“The prime Waterfront District holds enormous potential for economic growth and job creation,” said Whitehouse in a statement. “Securing this federal grant to improve transportation in the area marks one more step in the transformation of formerly industrial lots into a productive mixed-use development.”

The funds come from the EDA’s Local Technical Assistance Program.
