EAST GREENWICH – In its annual assessment of Section 8 programs, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development last month awarded the East Greenwich Housing Authority its highest score, a 100.
With the score, the EGHA reaches a “high performer” status, the nonprofit announced last week. The designation is based on 14 indicators, including housing quality, regular inspections, waiting list management and accurate record keeping.
“It’s gratifying to see this particular program score so well,” EGHA Executive Director Marcia Sullivan said in a statement. “The Section 8 program requires us to be the intermediary between a property owner and a tenant and our housing manager is especially good at that.
“We are always looking for rental properties to add to the program and I hope this validation by HUD will encourage more local owners to look into leasing with us. Our monitoring of the tenants and the properties is very strong.”
Section 8 is a federal housing assistance program for private property owners who rent to low-income tenants. In East Greenwich, about $1 million annually goes to the local property owners of more than 150 housing units, according to EGHA.
