Electric Boat awarded $174M contract for nuclear-submarine work

NORTH KINGSTOWN – With about 2% of the work to be performed at Quonset Point and in Newport, the U.S. Navy awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat a $174 million contract for nuclear-submarine work.

If all contract options are exercised, it could be worth more than $1 billion over five years, according to a news release.

The contract calls for Electric Boat to provide design agent, planning yard and engineering services along with technical support for active nuclear submarines and submersible systems. The bulk of the work, about 70%, will be performed in Groton, Conn., with 13% performed in Kings Bay, Ga.; 10% performed in Bangor, Wash.; 3% performed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; and 2% performed in Newport and at Quonset Point in North Kingstown.

Work for this project is expected to be completed by September 2023.
