Before the birth of my twin sons in January 2022, I wrote a blog post titled, “I’m Having Twins! How To Take Leave and Support Your Co-workers To Keep Things Moving,” reflecting on the challenges of preparing for my first extended leave from the company I founded in 2014.
As the primary reviewer and approver in our hub-and-spoke work model, I was anxious about stepping away. We used my leave as an opportunity to implement a more resilient, distributed leadership structure, empowering team members to step up as leaders on their projects and within their domains.
The transition wasn’t without its challenges. We had to strengthen our communication and collaboration to operate effectively as a cohesive unit. Three years later, I can confidently say that this shift has led to unprecedented growth – both financially for the company and in the leadership capacity of our team.
By giving people the autonomy they needed, we unlocked significant productivity gains, which have been reflected in the quality of our work. Our growing client base has noticed the difference, and we’ve been fortunate to rank among Providence Business News’ fastest growing businesses for the second consecutive year.
Your company and employees can similarly benefit if you encourage each member to pursue projects aligned with their interests and professional development goals.
When individuals are passionate about and find meaning in their work, it leads to exceptional results for both them and the organization.
