WARWICK – The R.I. Energy Facility Siting Board approved a plan to relocate overhead transmission lines that currently have lattice towers in India Point Park and the Tockwotton waterfront in East Providence, the board announced Thursday.

The new approved configuration would reroute the lines slightly north so that the lines will cross the Seekonk River “just south” of the Washington Bridge, according to a release announcing the decision.

The rerouting plan that the board settled on is known as “Bridge Alignment South.”

National Grid PLC must now finalize the approved route and apply for all necessary permits and licenses.

The board denied Providence’s request to delay any decision for six months or more to evaluate the feasibility of burying underground some of the transmission lines after East Providence and National Grid presented the benefits of the Bridge Alignment South plan.

A project timeline sees National Grid completing preliminary designs by February 2018.

The relocation was part of a settlement agreement between National Grid, Providence and East Providence, and the R.I. Attorney General in 2004.

  1. This is awful, so the plan is to cut it through more of India Point Park and then run it parallel and right next to the linear park bike path and also add overhead lines from the substation across the marina, hot club to a new tower. In what world does this make sense?
