Ron Powers, Author of “No One Cares About Crazy People: The Chaos & Heartbreak of Mental Health in America” to Speak
November 2, 2017 @ 6:00 amFREE
The Mental Health Association of RI will feature New York Times best selling author, and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, Ron Powers, at its November 2nd event to be held at the Metacomet Country Club in Riverside, RI. The event will begin at 6pm with a reception, followed by a 6:30-8:30 speaking & workshop program. Powers is the author of “No One Cares About Crazy People: The Chaos and Heartbreak of Mental Health in America”. This event is co-sponsored by Bradley Hospital.
Powers book is based on the true story of his two sons’ struggles with mental illness, having both been diagnosed with schizophrenia. He says, “I was determined to give the mentally ill – invisible to much of society and often denied the very basic acknowledgement of their own humanity – a voice.”
Powers breaks almost a decade of silence about his sons’ struggles and delivers a decisive history of mental illness. He is also the co-author of “Flags of our Fathers” and “True Compass”, and is a Vermont resident.
“There is probably no better way to express the tragedy of serious mental illness than in the telling of one’s personal story. We admire Mr. Powers for raising his voice to improve mental health care in our country, and are pleased to sponsor his appearance here in RI,” said Ruth Feder, Executive Director of the Mental Health Association of RI, “How powerful a statement of Mr. Powers – ‘in our era, in our country, mentally ill people suffer and die because of our fear.’
The book will be available for purchase and Mr. Powers will be signing books. The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.
