WARWICK – The Federal Aviation Administration is awarding T.F. Green Airport $737,000 in infrastructure grants to construct a runway safety area and remove obstructions to the approach end of Runway 34 at the airport, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Tuesday.

The airport is receiving two grants, one for $646,792, which the FAA said is reimbursement to the R.I. Airport Corp. for purchasing 10 easements to remove and clear trees at the end of Runway 34. The other grant, for $89,661, covers wetland mitigation around the airport. The FAA said it needed permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to construct the runway safety area. To get those permits, it needed to monitor wetland mitigation around T.F. Green Airport, the FAA said.

The grants, according to a press release, are part of a total of $3.18 billion in funding from the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program this year for infrastructure projects across the country.

U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao said in a statement Tuesday that the grants will ensure T.F. Green Airport will remain “an economic engine as demand grows.”

The FAA said these grants are “over and above” the $250 million runway extension project, completed in July 2017. R.I. Airport Corp. President and CEO Iftikhar Ahmad said in an email these projects were “next in line” with “continued investment” in the airfield.

Also, the FAA confirmed Tuesday that Runway 5-23, which was extended to 8,700 feet in length and had its completion celebrated by state officials in October 2017, is now certified to be used at all times, including for instrument takeoff and landing. The FAA said it certified the runway on Dec. 18, 2017.
