Harbor House clubhouse, located on 12 Bassett Street in Providence, Rhode Island, is a peer recovery-based clubhouse program for individuals living with mental illness. Providing a wide array of supportive programs, clubhouse members receive assistance with vocational and educational opportunities, housing, entitlements, and advocacy, working together to help one another achieve common goals.

“To know that FHR is expanding recovery services in Rhode Island with a clubhouse is very exciting,” explained FHR President & CEO Debra M. Paul. “Through Harbor House, our goal is to provide the supportive services needed to have individuals reconnect with the community and meet their goals, whether they are educational or employment.”

Established by parents who wanted a supportive place for family members living with mental illness to go, Harbor House first opened its doors three and a half years ago. Due to lack of financial support and funding, the clubhouse had fallen on hard times and was in danger of closing. On July 1, 2014, Harbor House was officially added to FHR’s network of recovery services, transferring ownership and management to FHR and securing a future for the clubhouse.

“FHR currently has a network of clubhouses across the state of Massachusetts, in Attleboro, Falmouth, New Bedford, and Fall River,” said FHR Regional Director of Clubhouse Services Tom Couhig. “Having this expertise will allow us to leverage the assets and experience we have through our other clubhouses to really make Harbor House thrive in the Rhode Island community.”

In addition to a ribbon cutting ceremony, clubhouse members and individuals receiving services from FHR Rhode Island had the opportunity to showcase their artwork. Made possible through FHR’s creative arts program, Studio 35, watercolor paintings, sketched portraits, and handmade jewelry were among the pieces of art on display. Artists had the opportunity to explain and sell their work to those attending the event.

“FHR has the same mission as Harbor House, and we are seeing the fruits of that today with the turnout, with the excitement here this evening, and how we know we are going to be able to move forward,” said Harbor House Program Director Ralph Lord. “The stability that FHR brings to the clubhouse gives us an amazing sense of expansion and growth. We now know that we can hit the heights and shoot for the moon like we’ve always wanted to do.”
