When asked about what makes Shawmut Design and Construction a great company to work for, Chris Maury, a project executive who manages the Providence office said, “First off we are 100 percent employee owned. So there is incentive for everyone here to do the best job they can – because they own it.”
Maury went on describing what many successful companies talk about as one of the most important traits a company can have: good people who work together. “This Rhode Island office has a tight crew. A large portion of us have been working together for years. It’s a good mix of people here, and we’re a young company – we [have] the drive to excel. Another thing that, I think, sets us apart is that we‘re an open company here. We don’t close doors. All questions and issues can get resolved by anyone here.”
Another Shawmut company trait that Maury touched on was training. “It’s a unique company, a client-service company. We do a lot of training and development. We call this Shawmut University. I really think that we are known for our training program. We recruit students and put them through a three-year training program. That’s how I [joined the firm] 10 years ago. The company made an investment in me.”
Shawmut Design and Construction is a construction-management firm and general contractor headquartered in Boston with offices in Providence, New York, New Haven, Conn., Atlantic City, N.J., and Las Vegas. The Providence office opened in 2002 and three of its major clients – Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design and Johnson & Wales – are right down the street from their Davol Square location.
Over the years, Providence Business News, The Boston Globe and Crain’s New York have all awarded Shawmut various “Best Places to Work” awards.
When asked about the benefit package that Shawmut gives its employees, Maury said, “The benefits are simply unbelievable here; medical and dental begin on your first day and are paid in full by the company. It really is a great reason for sticking around.”
Robert DiDonato, senior superintendent, who is currently working on a project at Bryant University, has been working at Shawmut for five years. He leads on-site construction activities, working with crews and vendors and equipment and supplies. “I really think the recruitment program here is great. I get to see them in their first year, right out of the gate. These kids are green. Then by their third year of rotation … what a difference! It’s great exposure for them and for us. It makes us a stronger company.”
“I’ve been here for five years now,” DiDonato added. “And I’ve worked other places before I started here. … This is the best company I have ever worked for. The benefits, the ownership, the training program, and the people. •
