Firms earn awards for healthy employees

PROVIDENCE – Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, together with the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce, handed out Worksite Health Awards on May 23 to 84 Rhode Island companies.
To qualify for the award, companies submitted applications and proof of the number and variety of health and wellness programs offered to employees as well as proof of workplace policies that encourage healthy environments. Some of the most common worksite offerings included smoking cessation programming, flu immunization clinics, blood pressure screenings, and walking programs.
“It’s not always easy to find time for regular exercise and healthy eating habits when you’re trying to balance a full-time work schedule and family demands, but not finding the time has unhealthy consequences,” said Peter Andruszkiewicz, president and CEO of Blue Cross. “That’s one of the reasons that healthy workplace environments are essential to the health and well-being of Rhode Island employees and their families. Our award winners truly go the extra mile to provide their employees with programs that make health a priority within their organizations.”
“Fit employees are less tired and more focused,” said Laurie White, president of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce. “They don’t get sick as often, which cuts down on absenteeism and healthcare expenses. Equally important, if employees feel better, they’re happier and less stressed, which makes for a better work environment. It’s good business and good for Rhode Island.”
