Five-eatery Newport food tour

An epicurean tour of New England cuisine is available through a new business, Newport Food Tours, which takes diners on a five-restaurant, two-hour spin through the harbor city.

Marie Larsen Mechtaly and her husband, Mehdi, launched the business May 20. For a fee of $62 per person, Larsen Mechtaly will guide participants through courses at five restaurants. The emphasis is on businesses that use seasonal, local ingredients. All are within walking distance of each other.

The concept is not a nibbling tour, but small-plate portions, enough that by tour’s end, people will feel full and satisfied, said Larsen Mechtaly, a culinary school graduate. Local wine and craft beer also are featured.

“They get to learn where the food comes from,” she said. Traditional foods are not featured.

The tours run from Tuesday through Saturday, beginning at 5 p.m. Newport Food Tours also conducts private tours. •
