Innovation Studio began in Cambridge, Mass., as the Venture Café Foundation hosting a weekly gathering for innovators. We joined the Rhode Island business resource ecosystem in 2019 to support the Innovation and Design District. … In 2020, we made the strategic decision to change our name to Innovation. Last fall, we departed the Venture Café network and reallocated resources to our programming with a goal of providing more-impactful support to small-business owners and entrepreneurs.

As a service provider, it is our job to offer resources that are not only necessary and impactful but also community centered. Having a local team ensures we have the knowledge, relationships and experience necessary to provide high-quality programs that meet the specific needs of Rhode Island entrepreneurs, innovators and small-business owners.
3. What role does Innovation Studio play in the startup resource network in Rhode Island?
Innovation Studio fits into the network in two distinct ways. First, we offer programming designed for those new to starting a business. … We teach the basics and use an individualized pathway approach to help each innovator achieve their personal business ownership goals. Second, through our innovative spaces like the Biz Bodega and our entrepreneurship navigation program, we are ecosystem connectors. … As connectors, we meet with and assess the entrepreneur or business owner and then make a connection to the organization that best meets their individual needs.

Some of the biggest barriers include a lack of knowledge about the resources available, capital limitations and time. … We reduce barriers by streamlining the process. We are a one-stop-shop where a business owner/entrepreneur can get what they need, when they need it, in the way that works for them.
5. What are your plans for expanding the Biz Bodega programming?
Innovation Studio offers no-cost, 1-2-1 expert advising; networking; workshops; a series called LAUNCH! … Over the course of four sessions, participants will learn the characteristics necessary to become entrepreneurs.
