FM Global receives Business Insurance Innovation Award for flood map

JOHNSTON – FM Global, a global property insurer, has won a 2017 Innovation Award from Business Insurance magazine for its recently released Global Food Map.

The Johnston-based company released the map that shows a worldwide view of high- and moderate-hazard flood zones across the globe, “even in areas where previously available information was unreliable, inconsistent or nonexistent,” according to a press release.

“It seems to have met a need with people around the world,” said Brion Callori, senior vice president and manager of engineering and research at FM Global. “Many of them are using it when they are looking at new facilities.”

The mutual insurance company specializes in property risk management and says it represents one of every three Fortune 1,000 companies. The new flood map is designed to help clients more accurately answer the question: “Are your locations in or out of potential flood zones?”

Business Insurance gave the award, saying the company has given risk managers and stakeholders “a free tool to assess flood exposures and enhance their loss-prevention and site-location decisions.”

FM Global has received Innovation Awards in the past for its MyRisk tool to identify risk; its Resilience Index, which ranks 130 countries and territories based on resilience to business disruptive events; and the company’s SimZone, a training facility in Massachusetts.
