Former chief of failed LOA has new venture

Just one year after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, Log On America’s founder David Paolo has launched a new wireless venture in Warwick.

Paolo’s first company shut down after disputes with Verizon over payments, removal from the NASDAQ list and losing customers to rival Cox Communications. He said he has learned from his previous mistakes and plans to make his new business a success.

Paolo’s Skypath Networks Inc., a wireless service provider, acts as a wholesaler on carrier’s networks. The company is similar to Arch Wireless and Virgin Mobile, Paolo said, because it has a relationship with device manufacturers but brands its service as its own. The company offers two-way messaging, which allows subscribers to send and receive messages to and from other wireless devices, wireless e-mail service, paging and several other wireless services.

“It is very different (than LOA),” Paolo said about Skypath. “My past was in Internet and telecommunications where you are required to spend a lot of money on infrastructure. We are in a different space in the wireless sector and I really feel that it was an emerging growth industry and felt this was something I could begin to steer through.”

To date, the company has nine employees and operates a facility in Warwick and a small tech office in Attleboro.

The founder would not disclose any information about capital but did say that he has hired ACAP Financial Inc., a Utah-based investment-banking firm to help in raising funds.

Asked if his past with LOA will hurt his chance for funding, Paolo said: “It hasn’t hindered us at all.”

Skypath also has relationships with five “top-tier” customers, according to its owner, but the company would not disclose who those customers are.
