Free File to help lower-income Rhode Islanders

PROVIDENCE – Several local groups announced last week a public-private partnership called Free File aimed at helping lower and moderate income Rhode Island taxpayers – including those eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit, active-duty military, students and seniors – to electronically prepare and e-file their federal and state tax returns for free.
The Free File Alliance is a nationwide partnership between the IRS (www.irs.gov), 21 state tax agencies, including the R.I. Division of Taxation (www.tax.state.ri.us) and electronic tax software manufacturers, including Intuit, the maker of TurboTax Freedom Edition.
Locally, eligible taxpayers can come to ACORN’s Rhode Island office, located at 807 Broad St., Suite 220, Providence, and use TurboTax Freedom Edition with the help of a trained volunteer. The service is available 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, until April 15.
Along with ACORN, the Computer & Communications Industry Association and the John Hope Settlement House are among the local groups that are assisting the Free File program.
