One year ago, the average price for regular unleaded gasoline in Rhode Island was $2.93 per gallon.
The agency said the increase is primarily due to the high cost of crude oil, which is hovering near $110 a barrel. Every state in the nation is now averaging more than $4 a gallon for regular unleaded gasoline.
“The high cost of crude oil, the key ingredient in gasoline, continues to push up pump prices dramatically for consumers,” Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast director of public and government affairs, said in a statement. “Even the annual seasonal demand dip for gasoline that we typically see between spring break and Memorial Day – which would normally help lower prices – is having no effect this year.”
AAA Northeast’s May 16 survey of fuel prices found the current national average to be 16 cents higher than last week ($4.32), averaging $4.48 a gallon. Today’s national average price is 41 cents higher than a month ago ($4.07), and $1.44 higher than this day last year ($3.04).
