PROVIDENCE – The average weekly price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline in Rhode Island is up 4 cents from last week at $2.90 per gallon, AAA Northeast said Monday. That price is 9 cents lower than the national average and 8 cents less than it was a year ago. Gasoline prices are climbing slightly across the Northeast on seasonal trends and now face new upward pressure from higher oil prices stemming from the escalation of conflict in the Middle East over the weekend, the agency said. Gasoline demand is strengthening as winter draws to a close and output is declining as refiners conduct maintenance before the busy summer driving season, according to data from the Energy Information Administration. Oil prices, meanwhile, reached levels not seen in more than a year after weekend strikes against Iran by the U.S. and Israel. While it’s too soon to determine the long-term impact of the conflict on local gasoline prices, AAA said higher global oil prices and the disruption of seaborne cargos through the region is causing immediate short-term price hikes to ripple through global petroleum markets. “Even before the escalation of conflict in the Middle East, gasoline prices were poised to begin climbing on seasonal expectations of increased demand and higher production costs,” said Jillian Young, director of public relations for AAA Northeast. “When markets react to geopolitical conflict, rising oil prices put upward pressure on gas prices, but time will tell how large the impact will be at the pump.” Midgrade gas in Rhode Island averages $3.64 per gallon, premium gas averages $4.04 per gallon and diesel fuel averages $3.99 per gallon. In Massachusetts, the average weekly price of self-serve, regular unleaded also is up 1 cent at $2.91 per gallon. That price is 8 cents less than the national average and 10 cents less than it was a year ago. Midgrade gas in the Bay State averages $3.53 per gallon, premium gas averages $3.91 per gallon and diesel fuel averages $3.95 per gallon.
