PROVIDENCE – “The average price of gasoline in Rhode Island is up a penny,” in the state’s fourth consecutive weekly gain, Lloyd P. Alpert, AAA Southern New England’s senior vice president for public and government affairs, wrote in today’s fuel-price report.
The auto club’s Jan. 26 survey found that self-serve, unleaded regular was selling for an average of $1.849 per gallon at Ocean State stations. That represented an increase of 1 cent compared with last week (READ MORE) and 20 cents over the four weeks since Dec. 29. But the local average was still $2.26 below July’s record high of $4.109 per gallon and $1.20 less than Rhode Island’s year-ago price of $3.049.
In neighboring Massachusetts, gasoline prices rose for the third consecutive week. The average self-serve price of unleaded regular in this week’s survey rose 3 cents to $1.779 per gallon, after rising 5 cents in the week ended Jan. 19 and 7 cents in the week ended Jan. 12. But that still left the Bay State price at $1.21 below the year-ago average of $2.989.
Nationwide this week, the average self-serve price of regular gasoline was steady at $1.849, after rising 5 cents in the week ended Jan. 19.
Meanwhile, at Rhode Island stations, the range in self-serve prices for unleaded regular narrowed to 21 cents today from 22 cents a week ago. Prices ranged from a low of $1.749 to a high of $1.959. Wider ranges were seen for other grades of fuel, which had average self-serve prices of $1.979 per gallon for midgrade unleaded (up 2 cents per gallon), $2.109 for premium unleaded gasoline (up 3 cents) and $2.579 for diesel (down 1 cent, after holding steady for the preceding three weeks).
