GM-Ford merger mulled, says industry magazine

Senior executives at General Motors and Ford Motor Co. have discussed a possible merger or alliance, Automotive News reports in its Sept. 18 edition, though it is not clear whether those talks will bear fruit. The two Detroit-based automakers both declined to comment.

Meanwhile, the industry news magazine reports, Ford is planning to slash as many as 600 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury dealerships nationwide over the next three years. Sources close to the automaker previously have cited the Northeast as a particular target of the store-consolidation plan.
