HOPKINTON – GreenBytes Inc., a two-year-old maker of energy-efficient data-storage products, has hired Rich Shea, an executive who helped grow EqualLogic before its $1.4 billion purchase by Dell Computer, as its new vice president of sales.

The company said Shea will lead the sales push on GreenBytes’ new GB-X Series de-duplication storage appliances. His responsibilities will include developing the GreenBytes sales organization and building the company’s growing network of resellers.

“We are thrilled to welcome Rich Shea to the GreenBytes team,” Bob Petrocelli, CEO, said in a statement. “His wealth of experience and deep understanding of the storage market is a tremendous asset to our company, and we expect him to make a very large contribution to the success of the company.”

Shea trained as a nuclear engineer and has degrees from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Boston College. Before serving as EqualLogic’s first sales manager, he was global director of sales for EMC Corp.’s Media Solutions Group and prior to that was an executive at News Corp., the media giant owned by Rupert Murdoch.

“I am excited about the opportunity to be involved with an innovative company like GreenBytes, and to build on the successes I’ve enjoyed in my career,” Shea said in a statement. “I believe that our GB-X Series appliances will have a tremendous impact on the market, and I look forward to working closely with our channel partners to deliver products that provide unparalleled performance, scalability and ease-of-use.”

In September GreenBytes was awarded the 2009 Providence Business Innovation Award for the information-technology sector.
