HARI expresses support for health care legislation

PROVIDENCE – The Hospital Association of Rhode Island recently announced its support for legislation that has been introduced into the General Assembly.

“Rhode Island’s health care system is in crisis, and hospitals, patients and communities are already feeling immense strain,” said Howard Dulude, interim president of the Hospital Association of Rhode Island. “This legislation would increase reimbursement rates to health care providers in the community and stabilize hospital funding, which are critical steps in addressing the pressures that are affecting access to care across the state. Now is the time for real solutions that invest in our health care system, support health care workers and essential health services for all.”

HARI expressed support for the follow legislation:

A joint resolution from Sen. Jacob Bissaillon, D-Providence, and Rep. Thomas Noret, D-Coventry, proposes a $90 million appropriation of state general revenue to increase physician and advanced practice provider reimbursement rates in the state’s Medicaid program.

A bill sponsored by Sen. V. Susan Sosnowski, D-South Kingstown, and Rep. Teresa Tanzi, D-Narragansett, to boost the state’s commercial health care reimbursement rates so they are closer to Massachusetts and Connecticut. The measure also preserves cost control mechanisms of existing contract rate caps and provides a temporary increase of 2 percentage points to these caps for three years.

A bill sponsored by Sen. David Tikoian, D-Smithfield, and Rep. David Bennett, D-Warwick, would raise Managed Medicaid payments for hospitals in Rhode Island without any added cost to taxpayers. The legislation would expand the hospital Managed Medicaid State Directed Payment program to maximize federal matching funds.

“Patients and providers appreciate the leadership of Representatives Bennett, Noret and Tanzi and Senators Bissaillon, Sosnowski and Tikoian for advancing legislation that will help stabilize Rhode Island’s health care system,” Dulude said. “We strongly urge the General Assembly to advance these bills to provide hospitals and health care workers the resources they need to continue providing care to all patients.”
