NARRAGANSETT – Narragansett High School students will practice making choices among careers and understanding the financial consequences of their choices during the CU4Reality Financial Literacy Fair on May 17, sponsored by Westerly Community Credit Union.

Students will see how career selection affects their financial well-being and other life choices when they create a spending plan based on a salary and career they have researched. The next step will be to balance needs and desires with the objective of living within their means.

Representatives from local transportation, insurance, food, clothing and other businesses will help students understand the real expenses they will face in adulthood and the choices they will need to make to avoid falling into debt.

“This program is a great way for students to gain a better understanding of why living on a budget is so important,” said Steve White, president and CEO of the credit union. “Our hope is to continue teaching our young adults the benefits of good financial management, so they will have a financially secure adulthood.”

About 400 Narragansett High School students have worked with the program in the past four years, White said.

Students will be awarded certificates for completing the EverFi online financial education program, also sponsored by the credit union. The nine-module program covers more than 600 topics in areas such as savings and budgeting, credit scores, interest rates, insurance and taxes, consumer fraud, investing and more.
