WESTPORT – A historic mill that’s home to a corn meal company and coffee shop in Westport, right next to the Rhode Island state line, recently sold for $550,000, according to the real estate firm that represented the seller.

Mott & Chace Sotheby’s International Realty announced that the 350-year-old grist mill property at 634 and 638 Adamsville Road was sold to new owners that plan to continue renting out the renovated commercial and office space to its current tenants.

The mill is home to Gray’s Grist Mill, which makes and distributes stone-ground “Rhode Island Johnny Cake Meal.”

The Gray’s Grist Mill business also operates a coffee shop on-site called The Daily Grind, along with a restored five-unit office space.

The Westport property is the oldest continually operating mill that’s been grinding corn meal for over 300 years, according to Mott & Chace. The building was constructed in 1675 and was originally called the Philip Taber Mill, according to the real estate firm. The mill continues to use some of the historic original stones that were used when the facility was first established, according to the firm.

“The mill is woven into the fabric of Westport and the New England Farm Coast history,” said Ellie Wickes, sales associate for Mott & Chace who represented the seller. “This is a wonderful opportunity for the new owners to continue the tradition of a successful business and ongoing historical preservation.”

The property was sold by Gray’s Grist Mill Inc., and it was bought by Delano’s Daily Grind Inc., a Massachusetts-based corporation, according to the quitclaim deed, a public record documenting the sale.

The sale follows the July 2022 death of Calla Guild, widow of New York businessman Ralph Guild, who bought the Westport mill site 43 years ago after it was previously owned by the Gray family dating back to 1880.

Delano’s Daily Grind is operated by Bruce Delano and Sarah Delano, of Fairhaven. The new owners were represented by Bold Real Estate Inc. during the real estate transaction, according to Mott & Chace.

The 634 Adamsville Road property that includes the grist mill, coffee shop and 1.7 acres of land was most recently valued by assessors in fiscal year 2022 as being worth $336,700, according to Westport’s online property records database.

The 638 Adamsville Road property, a neighboring 1½-story home that contains the office space, along with the 0.48-acre lot it stands on, were most recently valued by assessors as being worth $358,400, according to Westport’s online property records database.
