HUD awards $213,547 for R.I. housing counseling

WASHINGTON – Rhode Island organizations will receive $213,547 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help local families find and responsibly finance affordable housing, U.S. Sen. Jack Reed announced last week.

Rhode Island Housing will get a HUD Housing Counseling Award of $164,624, while the nonprofit Urban League of Rhode Island will receive $48,923. The grants will allow them to expand their counseling services for the homeless and low- to medium-income homebuyers, owners and renters.

“With rents continuing to skyrocket and more people facing the possibility of losing their homes, housing counseling services have become even more critical,” said Reed, ranking member of the Senate Housing and Transportation Subcommittee, which oversees HUD. •
