HUD grants 10 R.I. housing authorities $920.7K

PROVIDENCE – Ten organizations in Rhode Island have received a combined $920,699 to aid residents participating in the Housing Choice Voucher Program or that reside in public housing, to increase their income and reduce their dependency on public assistance and rental subsidies, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Thursday.

The funding is part of a $74 million distribution to 689 public-housing authorities in the country. The program, the Family Self-Sufficiency Program, helps public-housing authorities to hire service coordinators to work with residents to connect them with programs and services in the community to encourage strategies to find jobs, increase earned income and to work toward financial independence.

“One of the most important things we can do as public servants is to help HUD-assisted families achieve their dreams,” stated HUD Secretary Ben Carson. “Working with our local partners, HUD is connecting families to educational opportunities, job training, childcare and other resources that allow them to get higher-paying jobs and, ultimately, become self-sufficient.”
