Intermodal Station skywalk taking shape

WARWICK – T.F. Green Airport’s Intermodal Station and airport connection are starting to take shape, with the concrete piers that will support the skywalk built and a 150-ton steel truss bridge in place and connected to the main terminal.
In mid-May, the truss bridge was raised 47 feet in the air, turned 270 degrees and lowered into place 17.5 feet above the airport’s departure drop-off area, according to the R.I. Airport Corporation. The 166-foot bridge now bridges the distance between the terminal and the short-term parking lot.
And preparation work for putting the skywalk – set to cross Post Road – in place is underway, with daily work on the structural steel, framing and roof decking, according to RIAC.
A $267 million project, the Intermodal Station and skywalk will create the “closest rail line – 1,570 feet – to a major airport terminal in the country.” Initially, it’s set to handle the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter rail. The station is expected to be completed in the fall of 2010. It’s unclear when MBTA service would start, but RIAC expects that it will be an extension of the Providence/Stoughton Line, which connects to South Station in Boston.
