ERICA LAROS of Laros Law in Providence was awarded the 2017 Dorothy Lohmann Community Service Award for her work on behalf of the Childhood Lead Action Project. The Rhode Island Bar Association’s award honors lawyers who make noteworthy contributions in time and effort to a Rhode Island nonprofit organization on a strictly volunteer basis.
What is the Childhood Lead Action Project? Why did you choose to dedicate your time and resources to its mission? The Childhood Lead Action Project is the only nonprofit of its kind in the state – they are 100 percent dedicated to lead-poisoning prevention. We live in an old housing stock in Rhode Island and lead remains an issue in our water, paint and soil. Lead poisoning can have devastating effects on children – some have never developed language or remained permanently illiterate.
Childhood Lead Action Project trains community leaders, medical professionals, parents and landlords to be aware of and take measures to prevent lead poisoning; they also train contractors about using lead-safe work practices and Realtors to make sure proper disclosures are given when property changes hands.
Why is it important for professionals to give back to the communities in which they live and work? We need to share our collective talents to enhance the long-term vibrancy of our state. Providence is a wonderful place to live, full of creative and dedicated people.
How does your professional career allow you to help those in need? Being an attorney, I have the power of the pen (which is still preferable to the keyboard). Like-minded people: Write me.
What needs to be done to fight poverty in Rhode Island? We could study other successful programs, [such as] the Housing First initiative in Salt Lake City, and then customize a program to meet our own local population needs. Housing First reduced chronic homelessness by 91 percent.
How was your first year self-employed? I’ve met interesting people, from bankers to bakers and millennials to centenarians; and more than one psychic medium. 2018 is an exciting year!
