The House of Representatives passed the fifth in a series of separation of powers bills on Friday.
The bill changes features of eight boards and commissions – including changes in appointments, removal of General Assembly members and the addition of residency requirements.
The boards affected by the bill are: The Board of Examiners and Interpreters for the Deaf; the Library Board of Rhode Island; the Disaster Emergency Funding Board; the Fire Education and Training Coordination Board; the Child Advocate Appointment Committee; the Motor Vehicle Inspection Commission; the Rhode Island Medal of Honor Recipients Committee; and the Rhode Island Public Telecommunications Authority.
Voters in November approved a separation of powers amendment to the state constitution, which removes legislators from boards and commissions with executive functions.
The bill will now be sent to the Senate for consideration.
