Local animal welfare programs benefit from $470K in R.I. Foundation grants

PROVIDENCE – More than $470,000 in animal welfare grants was awarded by the Rhode Island Foundation Thursday to 20 programs from across the state and one program in Connecticut, according to a foundation release.

Adrian Bonéy oversees the foundation’s Program for Animal Welfare, which funds organizations which promote and provide humane treatment of animals. Grants doled out by PAW recognize projects which have had a positive impact locally, or statewide, on animal care, education surrounding humane treatment and animal welfare.

In a statement she said, “The generosity of our donors and the commitment of our partners are expanding humane education, increasing awareness and improving the quality of animal care in Rhode Island.”

The largest grant awarded on Thursday was $45,175 to the Ocean State Animal Coalition based out of Warwick for its low-cost or free spay and neuter procedures and other veterinary care for shelter animals, feral cats as well as household pets throughout Rhode Island.

  • Pets in Need Veterinary Clinic: $30,900 (East Providence)

  • Foster Parrots: $25,000 (Hopkinton)
  • Friends of Central Falls Animals: $25,000 (Central Falls)
  • Wildlife Rehabilitators Association of Rhode Island: $22,750 (North Kingstown)
  • West Place Animal Sanctuary: $22,000 (Tiverton)
  • Stand Up for Animals: $21,000 (Westerly)
  • RIVMA Companion Animal Foundation: $20,000 (Providence)
  • Animal Rescue Rhode Island: $15,000 (Wakefield)
  • Friends of Animals in Need: $15,000 (North Kingstown)
  • Sea Research Foundation: $15,000 (Mystic, Conn.)
  • Volunteer Services for Animals: $15,000 (Providence)
  • Norman Bird Sanctuary: $11,000 (Middletown)
  • Town of Westerly: $6,000
  • Rhode Island Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals: $4,500 (Riverside)
  • Friends of Scituate Animal Shelter: $3,000 (Scituate)
  • Friends of the Westerly Animal Shelter: $3,000 (Westerly)
