Local restaurants likely to add jobs in coming months

The number of jobs in food-service and drinking places is expected to expand by about 400,500 jobs this summer, the National Restaurant Association’s 2004 Summer Employment Forecast shows. That swell will bring the industry’s average monthly employment for June, July and August to a level 4.7 percent higher than in March 2004.

Rhode Island is expected to add 5,700 jobs this summer, a 15.5 percent job increase from pre-summer levels in March. Total summer employment in the restaurant and beverage industry is predicted to hit 42,400 in the state.

The restaurant industry is the second-largest creator of seasonal jobs during the summer months ranking only behind the construction industry. More jobs will likely be added this summer than in previous summers, the association reports.

Massachusetts is expected to add one of the largest number of jobs this summer, 25,200, as are New York (29,300), California (27,000), and New Jersey (20,700).
