Lynch to present 2006 Justice Awards Jan. 25

PROVIDENCE – The 2006 Justice Awards are to be presented tomorrow night, during a 6 o’clock Celebration of Justice, in the 3rd Floor Conference Room at the R.I. Department of the Attorney General, 150 South Main St., the department said.
Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch is to present the awards, in eight categories named for his eight living predecessors. The former attorneys general have been invited to participate in the ceremony, his office said.
Listed as the 2006 winners in each category are:
• Pine Award for Consumer Protection: Susan Hogan, “Call for Action” problem solver for WPRI Channel 12/Fox Providence, and Audrey Laganas, consumer reporter for NBC Channel 10. They were nominated by George W. Whalen, director of the R.I. Contractors’ Registration Board.
• Michaelson Award for Crime Prevention: Pawtucket Weed and Seed. It was nominated by Matt Hertel, executive director of the Woodlawn Community Development Corporation.
• O’Neil Award for Domestic Violence Prevention: The Sojourner House Restraining Order Office, based at the Garrahy Judicial Complex, and its staff. Staff members Jean Costello, Rhea Logan, Susan Freitas and Jennifer Henao were nominated by Harriet S. Lebow, interim executive director of Sojourner House.
• Violet Award for Drug Enforcement: The Providence Police Department’s Operation Crackdown, and its team of Sgt. Fabio Zuena and Detectives Andrew Lawton, Nicholas Ludovici, Curt Desautels and Carlos Sical. They were nominated by city police Lt. Thomas A. Verdi.
Also being honored with a Violet Award is the joint R.I. State Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area’s Task Force. The operation was nominated by state police Lt. James O. Demers.
• Whitehouse Award for Environmental Protection: Childhood Lead Action Project, where Roberta Hazen Aronson is executive director. It was nominated by Max Arias, director of social services at John Hope Settlement House.
• Roberts Award for Law Enforcement, Uniform: Lt. Robert Voas Jr. of the Johnston Police Department. He was nominated by Johnston Chief Richard Tamburini.
• Israel Award for Law Enforcement, Non-Uniform: Darleen Crawford and Edward Mowry of the Nationwide Tractor Trailer Driving School in Smithfield. They were nominated by Lynch.
• DeSimone Award for Senior Protection: Joyce M. Hall, who had been chief of the Elder Abuse Unit at the R.I. Department of Elderly Affairs until her retirement last year. She was nominated by Mary Ann Ciana of Elderly Affairs.
