Markell named New CFO of Lifespan Corp.

PROVIDENCE – Lifespan Corp. has named Peter Markell its new executive vice president and chief financial officer, effective Jan. 30.

Markell succeeds David Kirshner, who left the role at the end of October after a little over a year in the role. Eva Greenwood had been temporarily serving as interim executive vice president and chief financial officer.

Markell will lead Lifespan’s financial and operational initiative and closely work with John Fernandez, Lifespan’s newly appointed president and chief executive officer, to “create and lead the execution of Lifespan’s strategic plan.” Fernandez, current president of Mass Eye and Ear and Mass General Brigham Integrated Care, is slated to start his role in January 2023.

Arthur J. Sampson, who has been serving as interim CEO and president of Lifespan since the departure of Dr. Timothy J. Babineau in May 2022, said the recruitment of Markell is one of Fernandez’s first successes.

“He brings a strong balance of financial and administrative management to Lifespan,” Sampson said. “Mr. Markell will provide key counsel to the incoming CEO and board of directors on strategic planning and direction as the system rebuilds from COVID’s financial and operational impact.”

Lifespan, which owns Rhode Island, The Miriam, Bradley and Newport hospitals, recently reported a loss of $77 million in operating revenue in fiscal year 2022, which ended Sept. 30, 2022. Sampson in a statement blamed the financial losses on inflationary price hikes, as well as “unfavorable” patient volume, which came in 9.2% below budget forecasts.

Markell, a certified public accountant and Boston College graduate, previously worked as executive vice president of administration and finance and chief financial officer and treasurer at Mass General Brigham.
