Market Basket to open first R.I. store in Johnston

JOHNSTON – Market Basket supermarket is opening in Rhode Island, the grocer chain announced Tuesday.

The store will be located at 1300 Hartford Ave., according to Market Basket parent company Demoulas Super Markets Inc.

The location was formerly the site of a BJ’s Wholesale Club.

The discount grocer chain is headquartered in Tewksberry, Mass. This is the company’s first store in Rhode Island. The retailer has dozens of locations in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont, including three locations in Bristol County, Mass.

“I am very happy and excited that Market Basket has decided to put their first store in Johnston. It is a perfect fit for the company and our great town,” said Mayor Joseph Polisena.

The store is tentatively expected to begin operation next year, the company said.
