BEIJING – Mass. Gov. Deval L. Patrick and the Massachusetts-China Partnership trade delegation today announced a deal to promote collaboration in the medical device industry.
“Opportunities like these are exactly why we came to China,” Patrick said of the formal agreement between the Massachusetts Medical Device Industry Council and the Chinese Association for Medical Device Industry.
Trade association leaders from MassMEDIC and CAMDI agreed to formalize their shared interest in economic and technical development, strengthening ties between the medical-device clusters in China and the Bay State.
CAMDI and MassMEDIC agreed to promote collaboration between leaders in areas including medical devices and instrumentation; surgical appliances and supplies; electromedical, X-Ray and imaging equipment; in-vitro diagnostics; ophthalmic and orthopedic goods; dental goods; and medical device software.
The two organizations also agreed to share information on industry developments; encourage professional and technology exchange; provide study, training and visiting opportunities for professionals; and enhance collaborations between research institutes, teaching hospitals and development organizations.
Both groups also agreed to identify potential partners; facilitate partnerships and exchanges between medical-device enterprises; and provide guidance in business development and investment.
“The China market offers tremendous potential for Massachusetts’ medical device manufacturers,” said MassMEDIC President Thomas J. Sommer said in a statement this afternoon. “Today’s agreement with CAMDI will help our medtech companies access this market through this influential organization.”
The trade mission to China is the first in a series of steps Patrick intends to take to strengthen ties between Massachusetts and China, the governor’s office said. The trip’s goals include promoting innovation and partnerships in clean energy, the life sciences, education and transportation.
