PROVIDENCE – Three grants totaling $135,000 were awarded Wednesday to three Rhode Island-based organizations as part of a $2.7 million charitable campaign by The Joy in Childhood Foundation out of Canton, Mass.

“An opportunity to bring joy to kids facing hunger and health issues in local communities during the holiday season is very special to us,” said Karen Raskopf, co-chair of The Joy in Childhood Foundation, in a statement.

The three recipient organizations are the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, which was awarded a $100,000 grant, Children’s Friend, which was granted $15,000, and The Elisha Project, which was awarded a $20,000 grant.

The food bank grant comes after the announcement of a three-year, $100,000 grant announced in October.

Funding presented Wednesday to the 183-year-old Children’s Friend will go to support its “A Joyful Childhood” program, which seeks to establish and strengthen food security and nutrition education for low-income children and families.

Similarly, the $20,000 grant to The Elisha Project will further fund its Healthy Weekends program, which provides healthy lunches to local students on weekends during the school year and throughout the week during summer vacation.

Raskopf added, these grants “will help ensure that children in Rhode Island and Bristol County, Mass., who are facing hunger and health issues can experience the joy of the holidays.”

These grants are three of 200 that will be presented to nonprofits across the country by The Joy in Childhood Foundation.

The Joy in Childhood Foundation is run by Dunkin’ Donuts’ corporate philanthropic foundation and targets organizations that address child health and hunger needs in the Ocean State and Massachusetts’ neighboring Bristol County.
